First Nations & Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge
North/South Consultants Inc. has a long and well-established record of working cooperatively with Inuit and First Nations' communities across northern Canada. This experience extends from Ontario to British Columbia, and across the north from Yukon to Nunavut territories.
Representative Projects:
Assistance with Long-Term Monitoring Programs
Assisted a number of First Nations' communities by training community members to facilitate the community-based conduct of long-term environmental monitoring programs. Through these programs North/South gains an understanding of local knowledge that is used to guide scientific programs.
Post-Project Evaluations: Impacts on Aboriginal Communities
Participated in studies to assess impacts resulting from the construction and operation of hydroelectric generating stations, including physical, environmental, and socio-economic effects of the projects over the past 30 years. Responsibilities included compilation and interpretation of resource-use data including: commercial, domestic, and sport fisheries; commercial and domestic trapping; and subsistence hunting.
Inuit Traditional Knowledge of the Distribution and Biology of High Arctic Narwhal and Beluga
Held a workshop in Iqaluit to refine a survey questionnaire and familiarize seven local interviewers with interview techniques. Synthesized survey results into a final report published in Inuktitut and English.
Northern Flood Agreement Claims
Quantified and negotiated a number of domestic and commercial fishing claims filed by Nelson House, Norway House, and Cross Lake First Nations. North/South Consultants has also been involved in claims relating to transportation, recreation, and lifestyle and culture.
Grand Rapids Walleye Studies
Worked cooperatively with Grand Rapids First Nation, Grand Rapids Fishermen's Co-op, Manitoba Hydro, and Manitoba Conservation to implement a walleye spawning habitat enhancement study in the Grand Rapids spillway channel.
