Information Systems & GIS
The Information Systems group at North/South Consultants provides support to in-house personnel, partners, and clients by providing timely information through spatial analysis, spatial database design and management, and visualization techniques. Our group focuses on geographic information systems, environmental modeling, and technology transfer to serve environmental decision making and stewardship.
North/South has undertaken a wide range of geographic projects that span freshwater and marine ecosystems, and range from small stream crossings studies to large GIS-based environmental assessments with long-term environmental monitoring programs. Building upon North/South's specialty in aquatic environments, our group currently provides information and decision-making also on terrestrial environments while working closely with project partners. We employ a wide suite of contemporary software tools that enable us to work closely with a wide range of clients. Our information systems team is committed to optimum decision making via effective communication of spatial and temporal information.

Expertise
An Information System Approach
Our information systems approach provides a framework for projects that range from small to large. Smaller projects typically fall into one or more of the categories of support listed below. For large and more complex environmental studies we develop frameworks for decision making that handle complex physical and biological data for aquatic and terrestrial environments. Our approach combines geodatabases and large relational databases and provides ready access to the information by simple customized query interfaces served on the internet.
Remote Sensing:
GIS:
|
-
Mapping of bathymetry, substratum, and macrophytes in freshwater and marine environments, fish habitat utilization, and mammal habitat analysis.

Environmental Modelling
|
-
Predictive modelling of wave energy, macrophytes, and sediment distribution in lakes
-
Interpretation of 2-dimensional velocity fields for swimming performance and habitat utilization of fishes
