Pulp & Paper / Forestry
North/South Consultants Inc. provides a variety of services to the pulp and paper/forestry industry including: sonar surveys of effluent lagoons; assessing the effects of forestry-related erosion on aquatic habitats; and contaminant monitoring. The company also provides technical expertise in the design and conduct of Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Effects Monitoring Programs.
Representative Projects:
Experimental Watershed Project (Manitoba Model Forest)
Conducted a four-year study to measure changes in suspended sediments and sedimentation in small streams, and erosion from terrestrial sites in areas that were logged and reforested. A variety of harvesting methods and reforestation techniques were assessed.
Environmental Impact Assessment for the Procter & Gamble
Cellulose Mill in Northern Alberta
Provided technical expertise to a lead company conducting a two year field study on the Wapiti, Smoky, and North Saskatchewan river systems. Collected fish for blood, contaminants, and biomarker analyses, as well as standard biological measurements. Field work included: collection of water, sediment, and invertebrate samples for contaminants analysis, boat electro-fishing, radio-telemetry to determine the timing and extent of seasonal fish migrations, and larval drift studies to provide information on spawning location, timing, and reproductive success.
Sonar Surveys of Paper Mill Effluent Lagoons
In association with an engineering company conducted four annual surveys of the Rainy River Forest Products Inc. effluent lagoon in Fort Frances, Ontario. The objectives were to evaluate the condition of the lagoon's clay liner; to locate potential leaks; and to determine the sedimentation rate of residual pulp fibres in the lagoon. A similar sonar survey was carried out for Avenor Paper Products Inc. in Dryden, Ontario.
Environmental Impact Assessment for Repap Pulp and Paper Mill
As part of an environmental assessment of the Repap Pulp and Paper Mill, participated in field projects to collect fish, invertebrate, water, and sediment samples from the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and in the vicinity of The Pas, Manitoba.
