Limestone Generating Station - Nelson River Monitoring

The 1330 MW Limestone Generating Station on the lower Nelson River in northern Manitoba was completed in 1992. The environmental license required that long-term monitoring be conducted to evaluate the effects of the generating station on the lower Nelson River and its tributaries. North/South Consultants Inc. was contracted by Manitoba Hydro in 1990 to continue long-term monitoring studies that were initiated in 1985 by the Manitoba Fisheries Branch.

The studies focused on impacts on native brook trout stocks in the area. Monitoring of larval drift, stream utilization, and movements of post-spawning adult fish were conducted on an annual basis. Studies initiated subsequent to 1990 include monitoring changes to: fish communities in the lower Nelson River forebays; fish movements and utilization of tributaries; water chemistry; and lower trophic levels. North/South Consultants Inc. has published over 75 reports documenting results of the studies which were completed in 1999.
