North/Central Project - Hydroelectric Transmission and Distribution Line
North/South Consultants Inc. participated in preparation of the environmental impact statement for a joint federal-provincial panel review of this proposal to connect seven northern communities to the Manitoba power grid via a new 138 KV transmission line and 25 KV distribution lines.
North/South Consultants' was responsible for assessing the potential impacts of the project on the aquatic environment, particularly as it may affect fish, fisheries, and the fish habitat that support them. Sensitive areas were identified during the corridor, routing, and station site selection stages of the project. Ground-level studies were combined with aerial video recordings to provide both synoptic and crossing-specific habitat appraisals. Sensitivities of streams and rivers to construction and maintenance activities were assessed and opportunities to mitigate effects were described. Sensitivity analysis included consideration of instream, riparian, and foreshore vegetation and terrain features.
