Selkirk Thermal Generating Station - Environmental Impact Assessment

In association with SENES Consultants Ltd. Toronto, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the upgrading and life extension of the Selkirk Thermal Generating Station was conducted for Manitoba Hydro. Work on this project involved preparation of a detailed environmental description and assessments of chemical impacts on surface and groundwater, and impacts of thermal and chemical effluent on aquatic biota of Cooks Creek and the Red River.

Chemical and thermal mixing zones were modelled, and toxicity of ash lagoon and station drain effluent at end-of-pipe were determined. New operational protocol and mitigative measures to reduce impacts to aquatic biota were recommended. Long-term studies were established to monitor the effects of impingement and entrainment of fish in the cooling water system, and quantify chemical discharge and toxicity to the Red River.
