Resource Use / Management
& Aquaculture

North/South Consultants Inc. has conducted surveys and assessments of domestic and commercial resource use, including fishing, hunting, and trapping activities, and has extensive experience in the development of fisheries management and aquaculture programs.

Representative Projects:

Saskatchewan River Sturgeon
Developed a 10-year management plan for lake sturgeon in the Saskatchewan River for the Saskatchewan River Sturgeon Management Board. Managed a series of studies to estimate domestic harvest of sturgeon form the Saskatchewan River.

Arctic Char Test Fishery
Conducted a commercial test fishery in the Steensby Inlet area of Baffin Island for the Igloolik Eskimo Co-operative.

Yellow Perch Fishery
Conducted a review of the Lake of the Woods yellow perch fishery for Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resources Council Inc., for the purpose of developing a management strategy to take advantage of the market for yellow perch while addressing concerns with regard to the fishery and other fisheries on Lake of the Woods.

Loss of Use Study - The 1906 Lands
This study addressed the effects of the loss of use by Keeseekoowenin First Nation of lands that were expropriated in 1935, for creation of Riding Mountain National Park. Categories of loss assessed included, but were not limited to, domestic food, traditional medicines, furs/hides, recreational activities, timber, commercial fishing and trapping, Seneca root, employment, aggregate, and infrastructure.

Resource Use
Carried out assessments of the potential impacts of proposed (Wuskwatim and Keeyask/Gull) and existing (Fairford River and Portage Diversion) control structures on the commercial and domestic resource use of aboriginal communities.

Questionnaires - Lower Churchill River Area
Prepared/conducted questionnaires on domestic harvest and sport fishery activities in the area of the lower Churchill River and its tributaries.

Commercial Fisheries in the North West Territories
Conducted a historical assessment to facilitate the development of future fisheries in the N.W.T.

Marine Cage Culture of Red Tilapia in the South Pacific
Conducted two contracts to determine the biological and economic feasibility of red tilapia cage culture under tropical marine conditions.

Steensby Inlet, Prince Albert Sound, and Hornaday River
Arctic Char Test Fisheries

Assessed the feasibility of developing commercial fisheries at a number of locations in the North West Territories.

Aquaculture Development in the Dominican Republic
and the Republic of Togo

Completed nine contracts for the International Development Research Centre. Monitored, advised, and assisted with the development of a variety of aquaculture programs.
