Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement Project - Aquatic Effects Monitoring Plan
Manitoba Hydro undertook a project to replace the existing spillway and sluiceway at the Pointe du Bois Generating Station with a new 7-bay spillway. The project was initiated to maintain public and dam safety and provide a safer working environment for site staff. An Aquatic Effects Monitoring Plan (AEMP) was implemented during the construction phase of the project and will continue for more than ten years into the operation phase. Monitoring Lake Sturgeon was of particular importance given that a population spawned immediately downstream of the dam.
NSC's role in the project:
- Designed and prepared the AEMP as part of the Fisheries Act Authorization process for the project.
- Conducted construction monitoring that focused on water quality, lower trophic levels, aquatic habitat and the fish community.
- Monitored Lake Sturgeon egg deposition, larval drift and juvenile recruitment.
- Analyzed data and prepared annual reports comparing results to EIS predictions.
- Conducted initial operation phase monitoring described in the AEMP.
