Pointe du Bois Spillway Replacement - Environmental Assessment and Licensing

Manitoba Hydro undertook a project to replace the existing spillway and sluiceway at the Pointe du Bois Generating Station with a new 7-bay spillway. The project was initiated to maintain public and dam safety and provide a safer working environment for site staff. NSC led the aquatic component of the Environmental Impact Assessment process. Baseline studies began in 2006 and were completed in 2010. Protecting Lake Sturgeon was of particular importance given that a population spawned below the dam.

NSC's role in the project:

• Collected baseline data on water quality, lower trophic levels, aquatic habitat, and the fish community including distribution, abundance, habitat use and movements.
• Managed collection of terrestrial biota information by sub-consultants.
• Analyzed data and prepared annual reports that described baseline conditions.
• Conducted Habitat Suitability Modelling to identify Lake Sturgeon spawning habitat and to provide input for spillway design.
• Prepared the aquatic component of the Environmental Impact Statement, an Aquatic Habitat Compensation Plan, and an AEMP.
