Cumulative Effects Assessment

Assessment of the effects of a proposed development in conjunction with the effects of other past, existing and future developments has been an essential part of Canada's environmental review process for over two decades. Although cumulative effects assessment is straightforward in concept, it is challenging to implement in a practical manner on a project specific basis and is one of the most frequently challenged components of a regulatory assessment. NSC has participated in and led numerous large scale environmental assessments in which cumulative effects formed a key component and was the subject of intense scrutiny by regulators and non-governmental organizations at public hearings. NSC has also led regional cumulative effects assessments for both the terrestrial and aquatic environments.
